Holes by Louis Sachar is a great little book that I got through in a couple of days. The story follows a young boy called Stanly Yelnats who is sent to Camp Green Lake, a detention center in the middle of the dessert in the middle of nowhere, for a crime he did not commit. The boys are made to dig holes every day as their punishment but we later find that the Warden has an ulterior motive for ordering the boys to dig.
We also learn about Stanley’s background and the bad luck that has followed the men in his family from generation to generation and how he changes the destiny of his family without even realizing it.
Holes has now been made into a successful Disney movie starring Sigourney Weaver and Shia LeBoef. I think that this book was aimed at children but, just like the Harry Potter series, Holes by Lois Sachar is accessible and enjoyable for all ages.
