Make A Change – Change Your Hair

One of the ideas within the Lazy Girl Makeover Manifesto is to work on do things to improve one’s appearance.  I am sure there are lots of people who would like to change one or two things about the way that they look. This could be something quick and easy like changing your eye glasses and clothing or it could be something that takes a little longer like losing weight.

Something that doesn’t take long but can dramatically change the way you look is a new hairstyle. Things you can do range from cutting it short, adding extensions, changing its colour, making it straight or making it curly. A little bit of thought and preparation work done in advance will help you to get exactly what you want.

Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway

Today I went and got myself a brand new hairstyle.  I had been thinking about this for almost a year but just didn’t get round to it.  One reason was due to procrastination and the other was due to fear of change. I have decided that this is the year of change for me so I got on with it. If you are interested in doing something like this, then these are the steps I took to get my brand new look.

Collect Pictures of Your Ideal Hair Style

Once you have decided that you want to change your hair, start looking at pictures of hairstyles that you like.  You can do this by buying the various hair magazines, looking through the celebrity magazines or do a search online.  Gather together a selection of images.  If possible, look for images of women that have a similar head shape or body type as your own as this can help you to figure out if the style is actually suitable for you.

I knew that I wanted my hair to be short but I wasn’t sure how short so I collected together a few pictures of short black hair styles for inspiration. As I have already mentioned, I am quite lazy so I also wanted something that was fairly low maintenance.  The pictures that I gathered together included the singers Rihanna and Kelly Rowland, actresses Hale Berry, Elise Neal, Malinda Williams and  Emma Watson.

Get Hairstyle Ideas From Youtube

Another great place to look is on Youtube.  There are lots of people who have created their own channel where they discuss their own hair styling journey and provide really good tips about how to create a certain look and what products they recommend.  This is also a great way to find out what a particular hairstyle looks like on someone who isn’t a celebrity (yet – you never know), and how they maintain the look.

Two wonderful women that I discovered with the hairstyle that I was after were Michy GW  & miz22c1ark .  They have completely different day jobs but have gained lots of followers who have really appreciated their videos and blog posts about how they manage and maintain their own hair.  A little bit of research will help you to discover just what you need.

This link from Marie Claire is a collection of short hair cuts which also provided great info for my research and to reassure me that short hair can and does look good on a variety of women.

Visit Different Hair Salons & Make That Appointment

Once you have a few hair styles in mind, it is time to get out and talk to different hairdressers.  You need to find out if they are specialists in your type of hair and if they can recreate any of the images that you have chosen.  The next step is to find out how much it will cost and if you can make an appointment.

One thing that I found in my own quest is that there are a lot of black hairdressers who have set up shop in order to provide the service of hair braiding, relaxing, straightening and washing hair. However, very few were qualified hair stylists meaning that they didn’t have the skills to cut and shape hair.  This was an eye opener for me as I naturally assumed that anyone who worked with hair could do everything. Eventually I found a shop with a qualified hair stylist who looked at the hairstyle that I wanted and provided me all the information that I needed.  My questions included type of products I needed, the particular style that suited my hair and face shape and how long the appointment would take.

Once you have visited a few salons and spoken with hair specialists, it is time to bite the bullet and make book that appointment.

The Result – A New Hairstyle & A Brand New You

If you have done your research and you have found the perfect hair salon, all you need to do now is to sit back in the chair and let them work their magic.  Take your collection of pictures with you to remind the hairstylist of what you want and you should be walking out of their shop with a big smile on your face.

So I did all of the above and voila!  The hairstylist advised me that the Rihanna hairstyle would suit my face shape.  I was very happy with this although when she took a pair of scissors to my head and hacked a huge chunk off, I stifled a huge intake of breathe.  I thought I had managed to disguise my shock but everyone else in the salon noticed and commented.  Even though I knew I was cutting my hair I still wasn’t properly prepared for it.  The funny thing is that because the hairstylist just did it without any meandering, this helped me to feel completely safe in her hands.  I believed in her confidence, competence and skills and in the end I got exactly what I wanted.

So tell me, what do you think?  Did the stylist do a good job? Did I make the right choice?  Be nice now.
