Vision in White by Nora Roberts

Vision in White by Nora Robert

This is a delightful little book about a group of childhood friends who grow up and start a business together that is all about planning weddings and making people’s dreams come true.

The main storyline is about a character called MacKenzie who finds it hard to let go and to let a man get close to her at all.

I really enjoyed reading Vision in White. It is a really good  feel good story.  I have read other books by Nora Roberts and so I am pleased that I liked this just as much as her others.  It is nice to disappear into a fairytale world of love and life etc.

Malory Towers by Enid Blyton

Malory Towers by Enid Blyton

There is a little bookshop that I walk past every day on my way to work.  It is the sort of shop that sells books that have all been marked for clearance.  This makes the majority of stock more than 50% cheaper than in your average bookshop.

Anyway I was very happy to see a set of books that brought me back to my childhood.  It was a series of books written by Enid Blyton and they were about a fictional boarding school called Malory Towers.

There are five books in the set which correspond to each school year.  The stories follow the activities and adventures that a young girl called Darrell Rivers has with her school friends.

I absolutely adored the description of what it must be like to go to a boarding school and all the fun and excitement that it entailed.

The second time round I am very much aware of how quaint everything is and how terribly British and somewhat dated the language is.  It is certainly no Harry Potter,  Hogwarts school or my current favorite, The Twilight collection.

Sometimes it is nice to go back to the past in order to reflect on how much you have changed and how things have changed.  Enid Blyton is still a very popular author among young children and because these books are only about 150 pages each, they are quite quick to read.  They are fun, frivolous and full of innocence describing life in a time gone by.  This is just what is needed on my daily commute to and from work on the train.

George Clooney Film – Up In The Air

I am happy to say that I get to tick another one of the Oscar Nominated films for 2010 off my list.

I took advantage of the Orange Wednesday free cinema ticket offer to go with a friend to see Up In The Air featuring George Clooney.  It was a bittersweet film that I thoroughly recommend.

George plays a guy called Ryan Bingham. It is his job to travel from firm to firm in order to fire people.

He likes his way of life and enjoys the fact that he doesn’t have to put down roots anywhere as he is busy collecting air miles that he will never use in order to become a member of a very elite group.

His company want to automate the process of firing people by doing the job via a conference call over the internet.

It becomes Ryan’s responsibility to show the innovator of this new tool, Natalie Keener what it is really like to tell someone that they are surplus to requirements.

The film gives wonderful insight into to the different characters that are featured.  I was happy to see Anna Kendrick playing the hard nosed and feisty go getter, who believes that streamlining is the way of the future.  It was fun to see her playing a grown up after seeing her as a frivolous teenager in the movie Twilight.

It was also fantastic to see that George was paired with an age appropriate female partner.  The character of Alex Goran was played by Vera Farmiga.  She is a beautiful actress who I haven’t noticed before but hope to see more of in the future.

Although the film doesn’t have a happy ever after sugar coated ending with a pretty bow attached, it ends just as real life does,  with lots of loose ends which makes you wonder what you will do next.  It is definitely worth seeing and George certainly still has a twinkle in his eye.
