If you choose to do it yourself here are some reminders to help you as you go along. Safety is the main priority in planning your staircase. It should be placed not directly outside rooms, or in places where it will disrupt the flow of the room - such as in the middle of your living room. If you have children, you should choose materials that are child-friendly. Sharp edges should be covered and materials such as glass should be avoided. The staircase railing should also be sturdy and not have very wide gaps in between. Floating stairs are a major hazard and are not recommended, unless you want to sacrifice safety for aesthetics. Floating stairs do not offer any support for children and old people to hold on to when using the staircase.
The space beneath a stairway offers a wonderful opportunity for storage, either closed in and housing unsightly items (such as cleaning implements and bicycles) or open and perhaps forming a mini library or bar. In a space-pressed home, a miniature office might even be accommodated.
Also keep an eye out for splinters and just sand and finish to get rid of them. Get your steps checked for mold every now and then if they are near a damp place like the basement. Leaving that for a long time will give you a lot more problem in the future.
If you can, have your stairs carpeted as it makes slipping less likely. If its carpeted make sure the carpet is cleaned on a weekly basis. Vacuum each carpeted tread and dont forget the inside crease or the portion where one step meets the other. The side and the railings have to be vacuumed too preferable all of this with a hand vacuum and not the big vacuum which Im sure you do not want to drag up and down the stairs. Thats not safe in itself.
People get staircases made in accordance to their styles. There are simple staircases, artistic staircases, pretty or classy staircases. However your staircases may look, you need to keep them neat, clean and safe at all times. You know how it goes in the movies, messy dirty stairs person falling or slipping and lots of pain. So here are some things you need to keep in mind all the time so everything looks the way it should and you come down the stairs the way you should.
